Doping Scandal Threatens To Destroy The World Of … Chess?
By Dashiell Bennett, 3:30 PM on Fri Dec 12 2008
Vassily Ivanchuk of the Ukraine is the third-ranked player in the world, but he faces a two-year ban from his game because he failed a drug test. A drug test. In chess.
Actually, to be precise, he didn’t fail it—he refused to take it, which in the totally rational world of international drug testing, counts as a positive.
The reason he was even asked is because chess is trying to become an Olympic sport and therefore, must submit to all the all the rules of the IOC, including their anti-doping program. The only problem is that almost none of the world’s top players give a crap about the Olympics and most consider any comparison between their beautiful intellectual pursuit and silly baby games like soccer and badminton to be an insult.
Many in the community are furious that one of the world’s top players—who clearly wasn’t cheating—could be denied the right to compete because of some crazy pipe dream about Olympic medals. (It’s unlikely that chess will ever be included in the Games.)
Besides … how the hell do you dope in chess?
By the way, part of the explanation for Ivanchuk’s hissy fit is that they asked him to pee in a cup just moments after he lost a match in the prestigious Chess Olympiad … to an American! That’s like losing in ice hockey to … well … an American!

The thing is that the rules for the Olympiads were written clear before it started. So if the players didn’t agree with it. They should have protested. And if they didn’t like the doping rules, they should not have competed as players. No point crying like babies now. FIDE’s got every right to do according to the rules it set. Although it is correct that the getting into the Olympics is a pipe dream.
FIDE has become a total joke. It is about time that a new organization gets created which actually takes into consideration the right of most players…and not just a selected few.

How do you dope in chess?
Wrap green leafy substance into a fat spliff.
Light the fat doobie!
and then…
E4, baby!
And now you know!
Ivanchuk was obviously doped. All who claim there is no doping in chess are wrong. Why not admit it?
‘The thing is that the rules for the Olympiads were written clear before it started.’
Who cares about the rules?
‘FIDE’s got every right to do according to the rules it set.’
They got no rights at all.
‘FIDE has become a total joke.’
I doubt you competent to make that statement. Thus said, you’re probably very incompetent for anything in chess.
Chuck was in a hurry to get drunk again.
He is just another Commie Drunk
As far as I am aware, the testing procedure carried out at the Olympiad did not conform in any way to the IOC regulations. According to the IOC, first you have to have signed an agreement to be subject to anti-doping laws. I personally have never been asked to sign such an agreement (I would refuse) and I have played in many FIDE events. Second, the procedure of urinating has to be observed. In fact, people are allowed to go into a toilet to do it in private. Third, there is supposed to be a B-sample for later verification. I do not believe such a sample is made available to players (certainly hasn’t been in my experience). So, there is no legal basis for penalising Ivanchuk (who, one assumes, will readily provide a sample and a reasonable explanation for his behaviour in the near future anyway).
Leave the Chycky alone! 🙂
Chucky, you rule!
“Leave the Chycky alone! :)”
DAMN! NOW CHUCKY FANS ARE ON DOPE!
LOL LOL LOL LOL!
The question is not “how do you dope in chess?” – the question is “HOW DO YOU PREVENT DOPING/CHEATING IN CHESS!?”
“The only dope in chess is Kirsan.” (drum rimshot)
Chucky will not be banned for two years.
If FIDO did ban Chucky, more fellow top players might support him by reducing their cooperation or participation with FIDO.
Kirsan fears that possibility.
But Kirsan believes the players would return to the teat of the Kalmykian tax payers.
Is there any other reason to sign contracts with FIDO?
“HOW DO YOU PREVENT DOPING/CHEATING IN CHESS!?”
I trust all chess players must understand by now that doping is a potential threat to the world of chess.
