Bulgaria PM: We Are Honored to Host World Chess Title Match
Sports December 16, 2009, Wednesday
The President of World Chess Federation (FIDE), Kirsan Ilyumdzhinov, and the Chair of the Bulgarian Chess Federation, Stefan Sergiev, signed Wednesday in Sofia the contract for hosting the final Chess World Championship Match in 2010.
The chess face-off between current world champion Viswanathan Anand from India and Bulgaria’s chess master Veselin Topalov, who is currently number one in the FIDE world ranking (Anand is third) will start on April 21, 2010.
Topalov and Anand will play 12 games. In case they finish with a tie, they will hold a tiebreaker including 4 games of fast chess.
For 140 years of chess championship there have been 19 such World Title matches, and all them turned into historic battles. Why is it important for us that Bulgaria and Sofia were picked to host this historic game? We can just imagine that the opponent of our representative Topalov is a representative of India, a nation of over one billion people, vs. tiny Bulgaria of 8 million. It is an honor and pleasure for us to become a center of global attention with this match. Let’s wish Topalov the best of luck. Once again, I thank FIDE for the hosting of this match, which is a recognition for Bulgaria, which has had world chess champions from among both men and women,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said during the ceremony.

Bulgarians are best as always. Topalov will crush Anand to regain his title.
Anand will be richer by 2 million euros in April.
who really cares….we just saw the WCC and how people really care about the Fide Quilifying system….Kramnik and Carlsen are the real challengers……I mean cmon…Gelfand?? lol..Shabalov…and that other who’s name I can’t remember who works for Anand now…..c’mon…..get it back together…..Carlsen will never play in a rinky dink system like this…and until he does….You’ll always have “lotery champions” Its sort of sad to look at…like a bad trafffic accident…..If you don’t believe me..then look at the internet traffic…Gelfand Ponomariov…had like 500 people watching….Carlsen short…like 5 million! Doesn’t THAT say something?
Anand should play Carlsen for a real match…..would be fun to watch…and I bet they’d get much better money than the bingling beurocrats at FIDE could arrange.
Hey what about Leko vs Short? that would be a Good Fide match….
Susan the U.S. havent had the Wolrd title since they ran from Fischer! How can we trick them into getting the title back? U know Susan they thought they knew everything so we gave them something new to show them “they aint so hot” not like Cost-a-Rook in Miami! hehehe.
FIDE is busted…..but as long as they can make big paychecks for the second rates….well I think its a good thing..
Chess world championship has become less interesting than boxing.. The cycle leading to this match has been very confusing and unfair to say the least. And in the meantime, after a couple of years of complicated and everchanging qualifying, Carlsen is the man everybody is looking at. I hope the next match will feature Carlsen in the western corner vs Topalov in the eastern corner, staged in a major big city with lots of attention and drama.
