This picture was taken during the USA vs. Russia match in Nashville, TN. This is the USA team.

Boris Franzevich Gulko was born on February 9, 1947 in Erfurt, Germany. He was raised in the former Soviet Union. He is a two-time U.S. champion (1994 and 1997) as well as USSR champion in 1977. He is the only male chess player ever to have held both titles.

I have known Boris for a long time. He is a true gentleman in chess!

Some of his impressive records include:

– 1990 and 1998 Olympic Silver Medalist
– 1996 Olympic Bronze Medalist
– 1994 and 1997 US Champion
– 1977 USSR Champion
– 1993 World Team Championship Gold Medalist
– Participated in numerous World Championships
– One of the coaches for the 2004 US Women’s Olympiad Team
– One of very few people to have a plus score against Garry Kasparov

Please join me in wishing him a Happy Birthday!
