Dg3 and black looses Ne7 and Rc8
Qg3 and black looses Ne7 and Rc8
Dg3 and black looses Ne7 and Rc8
1 Qh3 Q:h3
2 N:e7+ Kg7
3 N:h3
wins a piece
1. Qg3 and black queen has to decide what to do. There is no retreat along the diagonal h4-d8, as both g5 and f6 squares are threatened by white pieces.
1. – , Qxg3 2. Nxe7+, Kg7 3. hxg3 leaves white with one knight more.
1. Qh3, Qxh3 2. Nxe7+, Kg7 3. Nxh3 is pretty much the same, although in this variation black has to take white’s queen, while in the first variation he has the alternative of keeping the queen by playing 1. – , Qh5 or 1. – , Qh6.
So perhaps 1. Qh3 is slightly better than 1. Qg3, as it leaves black with less material after the piece exchange is over.
How about Qg3 to deflect the black queen from the guard on e7?
1. Qg3
I think Qh3 serves the same purpose for the most part, but from g3, white can reconnect the king side pawns. Continuing:
1. …..Qg3 (Nf5 is worse after ef5)
2. Ne7 with check, and white will wins a piece for the c7 pawn.
Not sure if I am not missing something better here. When knights are involved, I have a habit of going blind.
Qg3 wins a piece
Qg3 wins a piece.

Qg3 wins a piece
1.Qh3 Qxh3 2.Nxe7+ Rh8 3.Nxh3
1. Qh3
1. … Qxh3
2. Nxe7+ Kg7 or Kh8
3. Nxh3
1. … Qh5
2. Nxe7+ Kg7 or Kh8
3. Nxc8
Alternatively:
1. Qg3
1. Qh3 removes the Black queen as a defender e7, and Black will first lose a piece and then the exchange in order to keep the pawn at c7 blocked.
2. … Qxh3
2. Nxe7+ Kg7
3. Nxh3 Nd3
4. Nxc8 Rxc8
A minor correction to my first commentary above. Black HAS TO TAKE white queen in both variations, because moving its own queen back (1. Qh3, Qh6) leaves white with a two pieces advantage (2. Ne7+, Kg7 3. Nxc8).
So black has to play 1. – , Qxh3 or 1. – , Qxh3 depending on white’s first move.
In this light it seems that 1. Qg3 is actually the best move for white (not 1. Qh3 as I wrote above). As Yancey Ward says, 1. after 1. Qg3, Qxg3 2. Ne7+, Kg7 3. hxg3 white gets an opportunity to reconnect his king side pawns.
But, yet again, 1. Qh3 is also winning for white.
