Gurge wins chess tourney at Fitchburg State College

Kenneth Gurge of Leominster, one of the area’s highest nationally rated chess players, captured first place recently in the George E. O’Rourke Memorial chess tournament at Fitchburg State College. Sponsored by the Wachusett Chess Club at FSC, the U.S. Chess Federation event saw Gurge, initially ranked ninth in a field of 22 players, chalk up a score of 4.5-0.5 (four wins, one draw). Two-time club champion Bruce Felton of Fitchburg, whom Gurge defeated in the final round, finished second with a 4-1 tally. Tied for third place with 3.5-1.5 scores were 1999 club champion Geoff LePoer of Westford and Gary Brassard of Leominster.
