Truro star on the rise after German victory

TRURO’S Michael Adams scored one of the best results of his career in winning the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting, taking his world ranking up to 12, writes Rhod Mitchell.

The 41-year-old Grandmaster was the only undefeated player in the ten-strong field of grandmasters (five wins and four draws) and on his way to overall victory beat former World Champion and current No 3 Vlad Kramnik and World No4, Fabiano Caruana.

The former Truro School pupil, described his victory as the greatest tournament success of his career.

He said: “I did not expect such a result. That everything went so well makes me very happy.”

Adams’ rating is now set to rise to 2,761 (gaining 21 points) which is his highest rating ever. His highest world ranking was No 4.

Adams, is now based at Taunton, but his parents still live in Truro.
