A recent study by Russell Research, a market research firm based in New York, found that Baby Boomers rank Scrabble first among board games for having the greatest impact on mental sharpness. Chess ranked second, followed by Trivial Pursuit. The study was conducted on behalf of Hasbro Inc., maker of Scrabble and other games.

It is easy to understand why two of the mentioned games would be on top of this kind of list, even on a list not made on behalf of the manufacturer.

Aw! c’mon! Chess vs Scrabble. Scrabble is a fun game and demands a good command of language,but chess demands a lot more!
There is luck in scrabble, there is no luck in chess just pure skill.
Scrabble can not be used in a non alphabet language, like China, Taiwan, Japan or Korea.
Even in some countries there are words that can’t be construst using standard set of scrabble.
But in chess…… It’s more universal.

You should always consider the audience. This is a chess blog, so obviously there is a bias against scrabble taking the #1 spot.
English speaking people responded to the poll under what conditions? Were they contacted by the game company (and perhaps the fact that they owned scrabble games and filled in a response card)?
What you should really ask is, where is GO? Polls are always flawed by the group being polled and the method of asking the questions.
