MANILA, Philippines – GM John Paul Gomez settled for a draw with GM Yu Yangyi of China and kept the solo lead in the sixth round of the HD Bank Cup Open Chess Championship at the Rex Hotel in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam yesterday.

Gomez, who swept his first five games, including a fifth round victory over top seed GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, failed to eke out a win with the white pieces and agreed to split the point with the higher-rated Yu.

Still, it was enough to keep him on top with 5.5 points, half-a-point ahead of Yu heading into the last three rounds of the six-day tournament.

Gomez, member of the Philippine team which bagged the silver medal in the recent Asian Games, handles the black against No. 11 seed GM Wen Yang of China in the seventh round late Friday.

Newly-crowned ASEAN chess co-champion IM Oliver Barbosa also halved the point with GM Zou Weiqi of China to join 11 others in seventh with four points. They include GM Darwin Laylo and IM Richard Bitoon, who also split the point in an all-Filipino encounter.
