GM Sune Berg Hansen Claims Thailand Open

The 10th BCC Thailand Open Chess Tournament closed the April mini-tour Doeberl Cup – Sydney International – Thailand Open. The playing venue was the Grand Ballroom in the luxurious Century Park Hotel, Bangkok, and the tournament took place during Thailand’s Songkran (New Year) holidays, 14-20 April 2010.

There were two groups of play: Open category for all players (9 rounds), and Challenger category (7 rounds) restricted to players rated below 2100 or unrated. 106 participants are registered for the Open and 74 are in the Challenger. Top-seeded player was GM Nigel Short (ENG 2686).

Danish Grandmaster Sune Berg Hansen entered the final round being a full point ahead of the opposition, and a draw against the Indian IM Ashwin Jayaram was sufficient for the clear first place finish with a total of 8.0 points.

Nigel Short defeated GM Marat Dzhumaev and emerged clear second, while IM Sunil Mokal Prathamesh scored a valuable win against IM Simon Ansell which pushed him to third place.
