The 9th Mediterranean Men & Women’s Chess Championships 2014 took place from 2-10th September at the Atlantica Caldera Creta Paradise Hotel in Chania, Crete, Greece, sponsored by Kydon Sports Club and Krommydakis Group of Companies, and co-organized by Mediterranean Chess Association, Region of Crete and Municipality of Platanias.

2014 Mediterranean Men & Women’s trophies went to Egypt after the Egyptian players GM Bassem Amin and WGM Khaled Mona emerged winners.

GM Bassem Amin and GM Vasilios Kotronios (Greece) finished on 7,5/9 points, but Amin prevailed on a better tie-break score. The best African player ever lifted the trophy right on his birthday, 9th September, and made himself a birthday gift of 1.250 € (shared first prize). Thus Amin is the current African, Arab and Mediterranean Chess Champion!

GM Vasilios Kotronias took the silver, while third place was shared by GM Ahmed Adly (Egypt) and GM Ioannis Nikolaidis (Greece) on 7 points.

WGM Khaled Mona became 2014 Mediterranean champion for women after defeating her main rival WGM Betul Cemre Yildiz (Turkey) in the last round. WGM Mona finished on 6,5 points and grabbed the first prize of 750 €.

WIM Ekaterini Pavlidou (Greece) and WIM Kiti Grosar (Slovenia) shared second place on 6 points each, but the Greek Olympic player took the silver.
