Rio de Janeiro

The Marcel Duchamp Memorial took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This year we celebrated 129 years since the birth of Marcel Duchamp – a famous artist who devoted most of his life to chess. Duchamp worked diligently in the chess world not as a top-level player, but as a chess correspondent. His actions helped popularize the game in the 1930s and 1940s especially. He formulated and published a lot of works related especially to the endgame, popularizing the term and crafting endgame problems that are still difficult to solve.

In the Clube Xadrez Guanabara in Rio de Janeiro, 10 participants have chosen to honor the name of Duchamp with a 9 round Round Robin tournament. 3 players from Brazil, 3 from Argentina, 1 from the USA, 1 from Italy, 1 from Portugal and 1 from Paraguay have gathered to revere the legacy of a great chess contributor.

The top seed GM Alonso Salvador from Argentina accumulated 7.5 points, 1.5 more than any other competitor and won in a dominating fashion. Second place was for Italian GM Carlos Garcia Palermo with 6 points, the same as American GM Andrew Hungarski Robert.
