This is really a difficult one (I took a look a little while ago but couldn’t find anything so I took a little pause and risced another look now before going to bed (2.25 a.m. here!)).
The basic defense idea 1. Qg3? loses the important pawn on a2 and the game with it.
Attacking is the best defense so I predict the curios looking 1. Qxg6! is the solution here.
1. Qxg6!, Rh1+ 2. Bf1, Rxf1+ 3. Kc2, Qxf2+ 4. Kd3, Qxf3+ (Rd1+) 4. Kc4, Qe2+ 5. Kd5 should win.
Have I overseen anything?
Afterwards it doesn’t look as difficult as soon one starts looking for a win but for a draw.
Nice one (if that’s correct).
Jochen
Looks good to me, Jochen. 5.Kc5 also wins.
I like the comical interlude of throwing the bishop to the wolves on c1 so as to clear an escape route for White’s king. But then, I amuse easily.
According to my Fritz9 there is a forced mate with white winning. Incredible.
Very good analysis Jochen,
same ideas here,
1…Qh4 2.Qxg6!! Rh1+ 3.Bf1!! (Clearing an escape route!) 3…Rxf1+ forced. 4.Kc2 Qxf2+ 5.Kd3 Qd2+ 6.Kc4+- etc.
How about 1. Qc1.
The threat is Qa3+ and if the Black bishop tries to save the a3 pawn with Bb4, there is mate on c8.
There is also a veiled threat of Qh6+ if black is not careful.
If 1 … Rh1.
2. Bf1, Rxf1
3. Qxf1 +=
Or if 2… Qxf2,
3. Qxa3+ and Qa8 mate.
How about 1. Qc1.
…
If 1 … Rh1.
2. Bf1, Rxf1
Can’t Black draw with 2…Ke8 3.Qxa3 Rxf1+ 4.Kc2 Qxf2+ 5.Kd3 Qxf3+ 6.Kc4 Qe2+ 7.Kc5 Ba5? The Bishop is immune: 8.Qxa5? Qh5+ and Black wins the R+P ending.
To anon 5:11:00 AM :
Of course he can draw with the line you proposed but why draw since he wins with the :
1.Qxg6!! see analysis above.
Anon 7:45 — Please re-read the two posts prior to yours in their entirety. You’ve refuted a straw man, to wit, something I never said.
yes, 1.qg6! is nice, I was thinking first that it looses because after kd3 black can play qf1+ (preventing the kc4 escape) and mate next move.
I then realized that f1 square is occupied by the black rook 🙂
