Saarbruecken, Germany – The German chess federation (DSB) has criticized the trip of the president of the sport’s controlling body (FIDE) to Libya.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov played a game against Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi during the trip.

‘The executive of the German chess federation believes the visit of the FIDE president to Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi to be inappropriate in the present political climate,’ the DSB president Herbert Bastian said.

Ilyumzhinov, meanwhile, defended his visit to Libya and said in a statement that he had several very serious talks. ‘I am proud that FIDE could contribute towards the peace process in the region and in the world.’
