Once again, Gelfand proves that his experience comes into play. As the top seed, he made it to the final by defeating Karjakin 2-0. Malakhov and Ponomariov will head to the rapid playoff. This will be interesting as both a very good in rapid chess.

Gelfand has simply lived up to his top seeding so far-the final atleast is a 4 game match.
It is funny how many underestimated Gelfand when he is such an experienced match player- he even beat Kramnik in a candidates match 15 years ago- and he is just outside the top 5 in the world still.

Well in 1991 Gelfand was the 5th player ever to reach 2700! Only Kasparov and Karpov was above him then.
Quite good longevity has Gelfand had- about 20 years since he was first a top tenner.
