Peterson does not have a television in his dormitory. He passes the time playing chess and reading. His current book is “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts,” a best-selling marriage self-help book by Gary Chapman.

Chess matches spring up between Peterson and his girlfriend, Ashley Brown (“I dominate her,” he claims) and quarterback Matt Cassel. He also plays online with former teammate Antoine Winfield, now with the Seattle Seahawks.

” ‘Toine, we go back and forth. It’s hard to get him on a chess match,” said Peterson, who dares not trash talk through cyberspace. “No, not really. He’s that good of a player, I don’t want to upset him or get him too focused. I’ve got to catch him slipping at times. But enjoy playing.”
