FRANKLIN –

FRANKLIN – Sitting at the kitchen table of his family’s Franklin home, Danny Angermeier begins to grin. Unfurled in front of him is a chess mat with blue and white squares, its playing pieces — kings, queens, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns — in various positions of play.

Danny watches as his dad, Dave, sitting across from him, reaches for a piece. The grin begins to widen. Danny’s practiced eye tells him there’s not much more his dad can do to stay in this match.

Dave Angermeier’s fingers rest, briefly non-committal, atop a piece as he pauses to consider.

Danny waits expectantly.

Then the move is made. It’s Danny’s turn, and he makes short work of the game. Less than 10 minutes after the game began, Danny claims victory.

Danny is no stranger to victory on the chess board. The 8-year-old was recently named this year’s champion in the “age 8 and under” section of the Massachusetts State Scholastic Singles Chess Championship, otherwise known as the Spiegel Cup, held last month in Natick — a title he earned with a perfect 4-0 performance.
