A chess tournament for young people will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Forest Charter School in Nevada City to benefit Foothill Theatre Company. The entry fee is $15 and is due today.

The tournament started when a student in Steve Ross’ class at the Nevada City school worried the area’s only professional theater troupe would shut down and his drama teacher — who works in FTC productions — would move away. He wanted to stage a fundraiser to help.

The tournament will be sponsored by the United States Chess Federation.

“I’m hoping to have school-aged chess players from as far away as the Bay Area come to this tournament,” Ross said. “As far as I know, a significant scholastic chess tournament has not been held in Nevada City.”

Check-in and on-site registration starts at 8:45 a.m. April 4 at Forest Charter School, 224 Church St. in Nevada City, and ends at 9:30 a.m. Rounds begin at 10 a.m.

The $15 entry fee must be postmarked by today to avoid a $5 late fee. All players must be a member of USCF to play in a rated section. Rated sections are K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The non-rated section is K-12.

Students are encouraged to bring their chess sets and chess clocks. If they don’t have them, a limited number will be available at the tournament.
