FM Ron Simpson of Raleigh posted a 4.0/5.0 in the Open Section to finish as the top state player and claim the title as State Champion at the N.C. Open Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 in Greensboro. Simpson is also the reigning co-champion of the N.C. Invitational — an annual event that includes the top players in the state. He is also having a banner year in the U.S. Chess League — leading the Carolina Cobras to the upcoming playoffs. NM Timur Aliyev of South Carolina was the overall Open winner with a 4.5/5.0 score. About 150 players participated in the N.C. Open.
Special thanks to Chess Dad Randy Wheeless for sending us the story.
The Carolina Cobras are doing great in the USCL. They have no GMs, but I suppose are getting great efforts by players like Simpson.
