Five players share first at the Vizag GM International Open

Vizag GM International Open Chess Championship was held from from 23rd November to 1st December, 2011 at Swarnabharathi Indoor Stadium in Resapuvanipalem, Visakhapatnam, AP, India.

The 11-round Swiss tournament with 200 participants was organized by the All Vizag District Chess Association together with Andhra Pradesh Chess Association and under the aegis of All India Chess Federation.

The reigning India champion Abhijeet Gupta entered the final round with full a point advantage ahead of the competition but then he was defeated by the 2nd-seeded Tigran L Petrosian from Armenia.

Contrary to the usual praxis in the final rounds of open tournaments, most of the top games ended with decisive results. Henrik Danielsen defeated fellow Grandmaster Marat Dzhumaev, while Lalith Babu outplayed his compatriot Vaibhav Suri.

Eventually five players shared the first place with 8.5 points each. Abhijeet Gupta still claimed the winner’s trophy on superior tie-break. Full standings bellow.

Jagadish Dube reports that C.R.G.Krishna & Swayams Mishra have earned IM Norm & IM Title, respectively, after the 9th round. Minhazuddin Ahmed of Bangladesh also completed his norm requirements after the 9th round. The 13-year-old IM Vaibhav Suri made a GM-norm as he held to Uzbek GM Marat Dzhumaev to a draw on the 10th round.

The total prize fund amounts to INR 1020000 ($1 equals to INR 45 approximately). First place is 200000 INR worth.
