Deysi Cori, young Peruvian chess player of only 15 years old, is the first Peruvian girl to win the Woman Grandmaster, during a tournament in Albacete (Spain).

She’s the first Peruvian WGM and also the youngest one in South America.

“I feel thrilled, but I still have another goals to reach. I must do my best, play the best I can and carry on” she said.

This is a big milestone for her, since it’s been a difficult road up to here for this working class family who lives in Villa El Salvador, one of the biggest poor neighborhoods in Lima.

Daysi’s father, Jorge Cori, travelled with her to Spain, with the help of Cementos Lima and Saco Oliveros school, who have supported Deysi and her brother. “All her dedication and sacrifice is finally paying back” he said.

Deysi will play in another internacional tournament in Benidorm (Spain) in a few days, in order to keep on accumulating points for her chess career. Her most immediate goal is to win the first place in Sub-20 Chess World Championship to be held next October in Argentina.
