There was a great response – see the comments thereto. It is special that so many chess bloggers sent in their best work. I was particularly impressed at how much thought went into some of those contributions.
For example, there was a great point – counter-point duo of articles by two different bloggers on tactical analysis of puzzles such as those I publish on my blog. (See the two articles under the “Position Analysis” category.) One advocated a solutions-based approach for pattern recognition; the other advocated problem-solving to develop analytical skills. Both bloggers put a lot of care and thought into their respective essays. What is your take on the issue?

Good job Jack! How come the USCF website doesn’t talk about this?
Well done Jack.
It is unbelievable! Excellent resources out there! However, beware not to get lost in the forest of information… Better to stick to one two or three resources and go deep. My main resources are Susan’s blogs, chess books and Monokrussos’s blog.
Thanks Susan, and thanks folks for your nice comments.
I liked Polly Wright’s humorous account of the last round of the US Open.
Great articles on endgames and on opening theory, too.
Jack, This “carnival” seems worthwhile. Your blog’s central role is as a Table-of-Contents (list of links) for a *monthly* webazine. The contributors are anyone.
If this monthly webazine catches on, ever more contributors will emerge, and the webazine could reach critical mass.
Being monthly is a strength, in that the quality of its content could be high, not diluted by the need to provide content daily.
Being monthly is also a weakness, because web site visitation comes from daily habit. That is where Susan’s blog comes in…
Susan blog shines bright when it acts as a “first stop” for daily news. By coming to this one web site, I learn about lots of other chess web postings and sites. This role as the hub for many spokes is one reason Susan’s blog is so valuable.

Hi Susan – thanks for the favorable mention. I’m half of the tactics debate you mention (http://reassembler.wordpress.com/2007/08/29/calculation-exercise-1/) but I think I can speak for the other half too 🙂 when I say neither of us is claiming a “right” approach. Both approaches are simply tools for improving specific weaknesses.

Thanks Jack for your nice complement about my submission. You’ve done a great job with the carnival, and I look forward to next month’s.
Maybe I’ll submit something on a more serious note. But then again if I take myself too seriously I get too stressed about chess.
