International Master (IM) Arthur Ssegwanyi has continued to improve his chances of staying in the team ahead of the Olympiad following his tremendous performance at the qualifiers over the weekend.

Ssegwanyi, the only IM at the local qualifiers after fellow IM Elijah Emojong pulled out at the event with no clear reasons, won his fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth round against Edgar Ntende, Emmanuel Mwaka, Bob Bibasa and Simon Gonza on Saturday and Sunday at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel,in Rubaga.

The great performance keeps him at the top of the men’s table with 8 points, unbeaten with a comfortable 1.5 points lead ahead of challenger FM Patrick Kawuma at the 11 rounds contest ending this weekend, Sunday, February 21 at the same venue.

On other boards, FM Harold Wanyama also won all his four games outwitting Kawuma, Richard Kato, Farouk Fauza and CM Daniel Baagadde to bounce back from two earlier  losses to get to a comfortable third position with 6 points.

Meanwhile Kawuma is in clear second position with 6.5 points after recovering from a loss to Wanyama to draw with Rajab Kamoga and beat higher rated Walter Okas and unrated Kato in the round robin event.

In fourth place is Okas with 5.5 points followed by Fauza in fifth position  with 4 points.

In the ladies category, Goretti Angolikin, Grace Kigeni, Phiona Mutesi, Joyce Kabengano and Christine Namaganda are enjoying the top five slots at the stiff competition that has 12 ladies in the fry.
