Debasis to get first GM chess star this year

Bhubaneswar: Odisha chess star International Master Debashis Das on Monday said in his earlier interaction he told that he will achieve the third GM norms, but it has taken one month extra which I have bagged on July 27.

“I am need of only six Elo points to be the first Grand Master of the State, which I will achieve in my next tournament”, he said after his arrival in the city after getting the third GM norms in the Czech Republic Grand Master Open Chess Tournament, which concluded at Pardubice in Czech Republic on Saturday.

In the tournament, Debashis (2478) beat Slovakia Grand Master Piter Michalik (2579) in 9th and final round to finish with 6.5 points.

Earlier, Das drew with GMs Dmitri Kononenko (Ukraine) and Philipp Schlosser (Germany) and beat IMs Bures Jaroslav and Chos Alexey (both of Czech Republic) to brighten his chance for the GM norms.

Debashis had achieved his first GM norm in the World Junior Chess Championship at Athens in August 2012 and the second in the 15th Dubai Open Ches Championship at Dubai in April 2013.
