THE Fiji Chess Federation (FCF) will hold regular training sessions and competitions from early next year to help the local players prepare for the 2013 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship to be held in May at the Sonaisali Island Resort.

While the national body has selected Doctor Sanmogam Goundar and Hilda Vukikomoala to represent the country, door is still open for other interested players to compete at this tournament.

FCF president Dr Virgilio de Asa said the locals had a chance to improve their international ratings and obtain higher ranks.

Players like Candidate Master Calvin Prasad, Manoj Kumar and Dr Goundar are highly tipped to go a level up following their participation at the Oceania meet.

“The Fiji Chess Federation is working on getting a discounted entry rate for the locals to gain exposure at the Oceania event,” Dr de Asa said. “There will be two Fiji Masters and some Candidate Masters awards at stake.”

However with tough competition expected from the top class chess players, Dr de Asa said they would run a series of training sessions to ensure the local players were ready.
