FIDE to hold next world chess championship in 2007
MOSCOW. Oct 18 (Interfax) – The World Chess Federation (FIDE) presidential board has decided to hold the men’s chess world championships every two years, and the next world championship will be held in September-October 2007, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov told Interfax on Tuesday.
The top four chess players from the world championship that has just been completed, and four other chess players according to the results of the World Cup and qualifying matches, will take part in the championship, he said.

Good for FIDE and Topalov. We will finally have some normal WCs. The Kramnik reign is over.
Let FIDE be the official challenger designate for all future World Championships. They are the ones that have held the so-called titles hostage for 13 years now!! Topolav should challenge Kramnik for the World Championship with FIDE backing. That can satisfy both parties, and if Topalov wins then FIDE can be the promoter of future WC. However, if Kramnik wins, then he can designate whoever he wants to be his next challenger – just like Alekine the swine did.
Long live King Kramnik. Until someone can defeat him in a title match of at least 12 games, Topolav only proved he’s the best tournament chess player today – NOT A WORLD CHAMPION!!
No no no…
Not more silliness, FIDE…I think FIDE might be forbidding Topalov from playing a WC match with Kramnik…
Let Topalov and Kramnik play a WC match, with both players legally committed to defending the title (on condition of winning) by playing another match against the next chosen candidate (the winner of a cycle or another RR tournament).
a minor correction – it is not the MEN’S WC, but the OPEN WC. I would like to see judith take part again.
So, I guess the Svidler-Anand final round match didn’t mean as much as we thought. It seems like there is no difference b/t finishing 2nd and 4th in the world championship, other than money of course.
I am glad someone else caught that ” men’s world championship ” slip as well. Topalov is world champion, not men’s world champion.
