Because of his many commitments, especially during these difficult times of World Finance Crisis that is hurting every country in all continents, FIDE President K. Ilyumzhinov could not attend the World Chess Championship taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 14-10 to 02-11 2008. That is why he is making this statement:

“Iam attaching a lot of attention to the World Championship and following it with great interest. I am very much impressed by the resonance of this highly praised Chess Event. The written Press as well as radios and TV channels are daily reporting on this exceptional Championship between two giant players, reigning World Champion V. Anand and his Challenger W. Kramnik.

I have been informed of the many passionate spectators that are filling the playing hall during every round. All over the World, numerous websites are reporting on the Match and commenting it with great professionalism through reputed Chess Great Masters.

This shows the great excitement resulting from this top level Competition. I have no doubt that this Championship will give Chess new dimensions and new incentives for National Federations to widen chess activities and increase the level of players.

I highly appreciate the constant efforts and the everlasting commitment of all Authorities in Germany without whose help this Event would not have taken place.

Of course, I am very much indebted toMr Peer Steinbrueck, Finance Minister of the Federal Republic and Patron of this Matchas well as to Mrs. B. Dieckmann, Lord Mayor of the city of Bonn. My many thanks go also to the Authorities of the NRW Region.

I would like to insist also on the fruitful relationship between Fide and UEP which is showing efficiency and competence in managing smoothly this Championship. Therefore, I would like to deeply thank its President, Mr. Joseph Resch.

Evidently, I send my true and sincere congratulations to two outstanding players, V. Anand and W. Kramnik who are fighting, with skill and fairness, for the World crown. I would like to thank them for the emotions and excitement they are giving to Chess Lovers all over the World”.
