World chess federation president expected in Nigeria

ABUJA, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) — President of the World Chess Federation Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is expected in Nigeria on Sunday on an official visit geared toward the development of the sport in the West African country, the Russian Embassy here said in a statement on Sunday.
Ilyumzhinov, president of the chess federation since 1995, will arrive in Nigeria’s capital city Abuja and hold meetings that are aimed at strengthening partnership with officials of the Nigeria Chess Federation.
His visit is part of a four-nation tour to Africa. Apart from Nigeria, he is also expected in Angola, Cameroon and Togo, in his quest for rapid development of chess across the continent.
The Russian, who has reportedly invested more than 70 million U.S. dollars into chess tournaments at international and national events, is also a candidate for the chess federation presidency in the forthcoming elections in Norway.
His visit to Nigeria would promote the “Chess In School program” in Nigeria, an initiative aimed at strengthening the game at the grassroots level.
The program also seeks to have chess included in the school curriculum, to build a strong foundation for the global development of the sport.
