FIDE President at the International Sports Forum in Moscow

Today, July 30, within the framework of the International Sports Forum “Russia – Country of Sports” in Moscow from 29 July to 1 August, Head of Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov participated in the meeting of the President of Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev with the heads of international sports federations: Denis Oswald (President of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations, President of the International Rowing Federation), René Fasel (President of the Association of Winter Olympic International Federations, President of the International Ice Hockey Federation), George Killian (President of the International University Sports Federation), John Fahey (President of the World Anti-Doping Agency), José Perurena Lopez (President of the International Canoe Federation) and others.

During the meeting, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov gave a brief report. On behalf of FIDE Presidential Board, which was just held in Tromso from 23 to 26 July, FIDE President officialy invited Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to participate in the opening ceremony of the 39th World Chess Olympiad which will be held in Khanty-Mansiysk from September till October this year and to make the first symbolic move.

In addition, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov addressed in his speech to the heads of international sports federations with the proposal to support the inclusion of chess in the Olympic games. It should be noted that this proposal has found support among the influential leaders of international sports federations.
