FIDE donates to Zambia
By ELIZABETH SAKALA

THE World Chess Federation (FIDE) has donated 240 chess sets and 20 clocks worth K27 million to Zambia.Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) vice-president, Joy Mtine who confirmed the development yesterday said the donation was made during the 38th World Chess Olympiads in Germany last month.

Mtine said the equipment was meant to help Zambia prepare for the 2011 Lusaka All-Africa Games.

She said CFZ has already received 40 chess sets and was waiting for the arrival of 200 chess sets and 20 clocks.

“We had for a long time longed to have these equipment but we could not manage because they are too expensive. But with this gesture, Zambia is assured of medals at the All-Africa Games because we have a lot of talented young players,” Mtine said.

She said the equipment would help CFZ start a schools’ programme that had been pending due to limited finances.

Mtine said the federation wanted to invest in young players because they were the future.

“After many years of failing to start the schools programme, we can now proudly say that the programme is starting in January next year,” she said.

On the Olympiads, Mtine said Zambia failed to mint medals because only two players represented the country.

Zambia was represented by grandmaster Amon Simutowe and international master Daniel Jere who amassed 8.5 points from 11 rounds.
The CFZ was forced to send two players because they failed to acquire visas for four other players.
