I just saw the following on ChessBase, one of the sites which I follow daily:
“Magnus watch: Carlsen’s performance is now at 2895 and his theoretical world ranking is number two, at 2792 rating points, six behind Anand and four ahead of Vladimir Kramnik. The official deadline for submitting results to FIDE for the July 1st list is June 16, while Aerosvit 2008 will end on June 19. However FIDE has in the past made exceptions to include key tournaments in the ratings lists. In April 2007 it rated Morelia/Linares although the results could only be submitted after the original deadline. The consideration is that the accuracy of the ratings and their up-to-dateness should take precedence over burocratic guidelines. Also, in 2007, 1.1 billion chess fans were ready to launch a protest if Anand were not ranked number one. This time it would only be only 4.7 million in Kongeriket Noreg, but FIDE would be well advised to heed the opinion of these and the many Carlsen fans around the world.”
The question is should FIDE bend the rule and make this exception or should they follow the rule? I believe that FIDE should be more efficient with the rating update. However, this is the rule which we have now. If FIDE makes this exception, would it be fair to other players?
We should have an updated ratings list as soon as a tournament finishes…even if it is unofficial. An official one every month.
FIDE has made exceptions before – so why not now?
They should stop making exceptions. It looks bad.
He’ll be #1 on a later list. So what? Follow the rules.
The precedent has been set. Not to make an exception in this case would be inconsistent and show a bias against GM Carlsen. But of course the main issue is the lag in updating the official list. Come on FIDE, get into the game!
Actually, NOT rating Foros for July would be an advantage for Magnus as gaining additional points is easier with a a lower rating!
“Also, in 2007, 1.1 billion chess fans”
Very poor for ChessBase. Can’t they settle with big numbers?
I think they should change the rule and be more efficient!
We are in the 21st century for Pete’s sake!
I will protest on the stop.
No more exception. Follow the rule please. It’s definitely unfair to other players.
The responsibility lies with the tournament organisers to comply with the rating regulations, not with fide to keep bending their rules to suit organisers who can’t/don’t want to comply with the rating regulations?
It is a clear rule that if your tournament finishes after the cut off date, it is rated in the next period.
Its time for FIDE to change the rule.
They should have computers and internet to update from the tournament to the FIDE server.
This will make it possible to have the tournaments completed in June available in July-1st.
P. Anandh
In the last round Ivanchuk can make it to 2791 with a win also.
Carlsen would still be second with 2792 after a draw though (only just- rounded up from 2791.5- lucky!)
If Carlsen lost the last round he could even end up 5th on the list-shows how close it all is.
He is not safe yet.
That’s funny- if Carlsen lost the last round and ended up 5th on the list- he will have made no progress ranking-wise since the last list despite going up over 20rating points!
FIDE, USCF, etc. should make computer programs that automatically rate events when they are submitted by the TDs. Then you can just take the next months official ratings from the the last or second to last day of the month.
I know that they have computers to help them rate things, so why can’t they make them automatically rate things?
I agree with people who say that things should be modernised. The deadline could be 25th of June or something like that. few days should be enough to recheck and correct possible mistakes.
The early cut off date seems to be set so that there are no last minute issues.
The major events don’t seem to be the problem. FIDE should make exceptions where they see it is in the best interests of promoting chess.
Rules are made to be broken. Why? Once broken, the US will arrive and settle any breakage with torpedo or missile power if and when necessary.
Oh yeah?
a Russian.
Who cares about ratings and listings?? Todays rankings are basically a joke perpetraded by FIDE to protect it’s elite players (aka: Kramnik, Anand, Topalov, etc). I think we should start learning how to look beyond those lists and recognize brilliant players according to their performance and perseverence in their matches. If we were doing that, we would all be looking at Carlsen as World Champion. And that might be the closest he will get to be one in years to follow due to the extremely outdated World Championship cycles which FIDE support today.
It does not matter. It is just a rating, not a title. Carlsen is already invited to every important event.
It was confirmed by FIDE that Foros tournament WILL BE rated for July rating list.
To say that exception was made in April 2007 for Anand is unfair. Every year before that Linares was always rated. FIDE was trying to follow rule and not follow its tradition, so there was protest, if I remember even Susan ;thought it is appropriate to rate that event. To rate aerosvit or not is a minor issue, but IMHO it should be rated. Most importantly as other bloggers have pointed out, FIDE should update rating list more regularly, weekly is most appropriate, but monthly should be easily possible.
Re ratings standards list updates – would a weekly update be acceptable to baseball fans? basketball fans? why is chess so different – on game completion is the only acceptable time frame.
Another twist and a blow to FIDE credibility:
Foros WILL NOT be rated for July list.
