European Senior Chess Championship for 2017 which took place in Sabadell, Spain from 11th-21st August.

Sabadell

The Championship was played in two different age categories: 50+ and 65+. The separate Women’s Championship was organized just for the 50+ category, while women 65+ played in the Open section and fought for separate prizes.

In category 50+ the European Senior Chess Champion for 2017 became GM Movsziszian Karen (ARM, 2502) with score of 7 points out of 9 games.Second place went to IM Kalegin Evgenij (RUS, 2424) who had  the same score of 6.5 points as GM Tunik Gennady (RUS, 2388) but thanks to the better tie-breaks IM Kalegin Evgenij finished with silver medal and GM Tunik Gennady got the bronze.

Standings Seniors 50+

In 50+ Female section, WGM Strutinskaia Galina (RUS, 2286), the World Senior Champion for 2015, took the victory with 7 points. WGM Berend Elvira (LUX, 2294) finished sole second and Aseeva Marina (RUS, 2162) took the third place thanks to the better tie-breaks than WIM Sirotkina Nina (RUS, 2155) since they had the same score of 6 points.

Standings Female Seniors 50+

IM Renman Nils-Gustaf from Sweden won the Championship in 65+ category and finished sole first with 7.5 points. Silver went to GM Giorgadze Tamaz (GEO, 2504) with 7 points and GM Vasiukov Evgeni (RUS, 2390) took the bronze medal thanks to the better tie-breaks since he was tied with IM Rooze Jan (BEL, 2307) and they both had 6.5 points.

Standings Seniors 65+

Women played the Open section tournament for Seniors 65+ since just a few of them were registered for the Championship. They played for the separate prizes and the first place went to GM Gaprindashvili Nona from Georgia, former World Champion. She scored 5.5 points. In the same category, silver medal went to WGM Fatalibekova Elena from Russia with 4 points and bronze to Kabanova Irina also from Russia with 3 points.

The Championship was organized by Ione Techno Group and Spanish Chess Federation, under the auspices of European Chess Union.
