The 11th European individual men and women’s chess championship will take place in Croatia, Rijeka, 5th to 19th of March 2010. Organizers are expecting more participants than any European Championship up to now, due to the high prize fund of 150.000,00 EUR for the men section and 75,000.00 EUR for the women.

Venue
Championship opening and closing ceremony, as well as the tournament games, will be held in new sports hall at Zamet, Rijeka. The hall is another big investment in sports infrastructure of Rijeka. It is a modern public complex situated near the market place and a primary school. There is also a library, the office of the Local Board Zamet, many commercial facilities, public square and the garage. The hall will be used for various sports and cultural events.
The underground garage with 250 parking spaces, including parking spaces for disabled and for motorcycles, is situated under the hall and the shopping and service facilities. Main specificity of the whole complex is over 51.000 unique ceramic tiles that remind on rocks. Uniquely designed, nuanced ceramic tiles reminding of rocks or a handball ball give the whole complex a specific feature, as there are more than 51.000 such tiles laid in the building. The tiles were used to form the sign “Centre Zamet” inserted into the square in front of the hall, that can be easily noticed already when observed from the first floor, and the architects say that the sign will be visible through popular Google Earth search. Special effect is achieved by telescopic stands that will surely attract the attention of the visitors.
The main stands have 2198 seats, and nearby is the VIP seating area that can accommodate 128 visitors. Thus, the auditorium has at its disposal overall 2326 seats, and additional 23 seats for disabled.
Rules of European chess Rijeka 2010
The 11th European individual chess championship for men and women is open to all players representing the Chess Federations which comprise the European Chess Union (FIDE zones 1.1 to 1.9) regardless of their title or rating. There is also no limit of participants per federation.
The championship will be based on Swiss system in accordance with the ECU Tournament Rules and FIDE Rules of Chess. The playing time will be 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one.
The order of players that finish with the same number of points shall be determined by application of the following tie-breaking procedures in sequence, proceeding from (a) to (b) to (c) to (d) to the extent required:
a) Median-Buchholz 1, the highest number wins;
b) Buchholz, the highest number wins;
c) Number of wins, the highest number wins;
d) Progressive Score, the highest number wins.
