EMOJONG UPSETS ANGOLAN INTERNATIONAL MASTER

Uganda’s Elijah Emojong has sent shock waves down the spines of Africa’s top chess players in Maputo, Mozambique after crushing a highly rated Angolan International Master (IM) Aderito Pedro (with a rating of 2339) in the first round of the 2011 Africa Individual Chess Championship played on Saturday 4th June 2011.

Emojong playing with the white pieces had a quiet middle game against the IM before the game concluded in a tactical finale involving a three move Bishop manoeuvre that caused problems for the IM leaving him with an exchange down and in severe time trouble. The game lasted 60 moves and was the last to end after the two players engaged each other for 4 hours and 50 minutes.

Following the spectacular win, the 19 year old Emojong is now scheduled to play against yet another highly rated IM from Egypt, Ezat Mohammed who has a rating of 2453 in the second round to be played today (Sunday 5th June 2011) starting at 3 pm (Mozambican time).

On the top board, Africa’s strongest Grandmaster, Egypt’s Adly Ahmed (rated 2630) made light work of Mozambique’s FIDE Master Mucongoma Miguel Jose Maconi as another Egyptian Grandmaster Amin Bassem beat fellow countryman Nyazi Nehad. The other significant result was Egypt’s third GM El Gindy Essam’s win against South Africa’s Deon Solomons in the first round.

The biggest continental event has drawn participants from Egypt, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Tunisia, Mozambique, Zambia, Algeria and Uganda including 3 Grandmasters, 7 International Masters, 6 FIDE Masters and 1 Candidate Master among other highly rated players.

The top three will qualify to represent Africa at the 2011 World Chess Cup to be held in Khanty Mansisyk in Russia later this year.

Uganda Chess Federation’s Vice President and FIDE Arbiter, Stephen Kisuze is one of the Arbiters in the event and has so far done well.
