Uganda’s International Master (IM) Elijah Emojong believes he can help Uganda win a medal at the 40th World Chess Olympiad scheduled for August 27 – September 10 in Istanbul, Turkey. Emojong, 20, is the first-ever Ugandan to win an IM and has put up a handful of stellar displays including winning gold at 2011 East Africa Chess Championships in Khartoum, Sudan where he posted a score of 55 percent.

“I know anything can happen at the Olympiad,” said Emojong soon after receiving a dummy cheque of $4,030 (about Shs11m) from National Medical Stores Manager Moses Kamabare to support the 10-man team. “I hope to improve my ratings and I hope to win all my games and get a Grand Master title.”

Gorretti Angolikin, Patrick Kawuma, Bob Bibasa, Harold Wanyama, Arthur Ssegwanyi, Grace Kigeni, Ivy Amoko, Ritah Nsubuga and Phiona Mutesi will also represent Uganda.
