And Kramnik advances closer to clinching this tournament.
But Le is tough, all right. Nobody’s been able to land a serious blow on him in this tournament, so far.
With that in mind, let’s glance at the crosstable as it stands, after round 8. If Dortmund were using the 3-1-0 scoring that everyone currently loves, Ponomariov would suddenly stand second, while Le and Giri would be tied 3-4. The effect would be to reward Ponomariov’s (for him) rather weak and nervy play at the expense of Le, whose play has been quite good, if a little dry. Which chess fans would be pleased with this hypothetical outcome? This scenario encapsulates my skepticism about scoring gimmicks like 3-1-0. If you want to get away from draws, the Kasimdzhanov plan, or something like it, seems more robust to me. Season with IMHO to taste.
Poor Hikaru…what a nightmare of a tournament. Congrats Vlady..a well earned victory.
