Magnus Carlsen teases Giri at Tata Steel chess tournament
World chess champion Magnus Carlsen ventured a risky line of the Modern Defence against Anish Giri after calling him a ‘coward’

Magnus Carlsen was solid with black in the first round of the 77th Tata Steel tournament and drew with Anish Giri.

There was some pre-match banter, with Carlsen, in jest, referring to his opponent as a “coward”.

Giri is known for having a cautious approach and the world chess champion might have been hoping to provoke him, but it was not to be, even after Carlsen ventured a risky line of the Modern Defence.

The queens were exchanged and then all the minor pieces.
