Cuban Leinier Dominguez Wins in Debut at Championship of Spanish Chess Clubs

Havana, Cuba, Nov 22.- Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Dominguez beat Russian GM Alexey Dreev during the opening round of the Division of Honor of the Spanish Championship of Chess Clubs that began on Monday afternoon in the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

Dominguez —the best-ranked Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,710 points— played with the black pieces and defeated Dreev (2,711) after 80 moves of a Grunfeld Defense.

The Cuban player is defending the first board of the Sestao Naturgas Energía club, one of the pre-tournament favorite teams to win the event.

With this result, Dominguez contributed to his team’s 4.5-1.5 victory over the Reverte Albox club.

Also on Monday, Colegio Markote-EIKM took a 4-2 win over the Solvay club, and Linex-Magic beat Cajacanarias 4.5 to 1.5.
