Cuban chess grand master to attend Russian club tournament

The Cuban grand master (GM) Leinier Dominguez, with 2,730 units Elo, was invited to compete with the Saint Petersburg team in the upcoming tournament of the Russian Chess Club League, from March 8 to 16, the official daily Granma reported here Tuesday.

Dominguez, ranked No. 20 in the Elo world ranking, and the first on the island and Latin America.

Concerning to the Saint Petersburg team, Dominguez is the second best chess Elo of the group, after the local Peter Svidler (2,744 points).

The list of the squad is completed by the Russian Nikita Vitiugov (2709) and the Armenian Sergey Movsesian (2702).

The tournament will be held in the city of Krasnoyarsk, with 19 selections to compete in seven rounds by the Swiss system.

The competition will help the Cuban chess player as preparation for the next Olympics in Istanbul, Turkey, scheduled between August and September.

Leinier Dominguez participated recently in the last clubs championship in Spain, where he won four games and selected as the best competitor of the event.
