Cuba’s Leinier Dominguez Advanced to Third Round of World Chess Cup

Havana, Cuba, Sept 1.- Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Dominguez advanced on Thursday to the third round of the World Chess Cup, under way in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansiysk, beating Moldavian GM Viktor Bologan 1.5-0.5 in the second stage of the competition.

After his victory on Wednesday in the first of their two classical games, Dominguez, the best Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,719 points, was able to hold Bologan (2,678) on Thursday to a draw and thus secured a spot in the third round of the tournament or Round of 32.

Meanwhile, the other Cuban player who made it into the second round, GM Lazaro Bruzon (2,673), beat his opponent Spanish GM Francisco Vallejo (2,724) on Wednesday but he lost on Thursday, and the match is 1-1.

On Friday, Bruzon and Vallejo will face each other in rapid tie-break matches to decide who advances to the next stage. (ACN).
