On Saturday, January 15, 2011, six members of the Denton High School chess club traveled with chess sponsor Fred Mueller and volunteer chess coach Alexey Root to Lovejoy High School in Allen, TX for the Region III scholastic chess tournament. It was the first team competition ever for the DHS chess club. The photo shows the six chess club members posing with Grandmaster Susan Polgar, who was the honored guest of the Region III tournament. DHS’s two-player team in the under-800 rated high school section took second place team and Luis Guevara was first place individual. DHS’s four-player team in the high school open took first place team. William Root was first place individual and Austin McGregor was fourth place individual.
