NEW DELHI: Notwithstanding the last-round loss, International Master Deep Sengupta achieved his second Grandmaster norm and topped a three-way tie to win the Doeberl Cup chess tournament at Canberra on Monday.
In the ninth and final round, Deep lost to compatriot Deepan Chakkravarthy to remain on seven points. British Grandmaster Gawain Jones and Deepan matched Deep’s tally but followed the champion, in that order, after the tiebreak scores were considered.
For Deep, winner of the World boys’ under-12 title in 2000, this title is the biggest in the open section. Deep, Jones and Deepan received 2,700 Australian dollars each.
