Dallas junior is chess champ

MISSION VALLEY — A Dallas junior walked away Sunday with top individual honors in the 2014 National High School (K-12) Championships, a chess tournament that draws hundreds of players.
Darwin Yang, a chess grandmaster-elect, was the No. 1 seed in the three-day tournament, which was for the first time played in San Diego. He won his first six games and took the title with a draw in his final match.
More than 900 of the nation’s top student chess players from schools in 32 states took part in the event.
The team title went to Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson.
Among the San Diego County teams at the tournament, Gompers Prep earned third and fourth place in the two divisions in which they fielded complete teams.
Of the tournament’s top 15 finishers, seven were from California, said Jay Stallings of the Federation’s Scholastic Committee.
