I had an insight within about 10 seconds- the idea of taking at g6 and replying to hxg6 with Bg7 and mating net. However, the line is clearly more complicated than that, and I don’t have time for a full workup, but….
1. Bg6!? fg6 (hg6? 2.Bg7! and the twin threats of Qh8# and Qh7# can’t be parried effectively)
2. Qe6! Kh8 (only move)
3. Nf7 and white will win both of black’s rooks at the very least through discovered checks, and there is probably mate in there somewhere if I were a betting man.
However, black doesn’t have to take the bishop on move 1:
1. Bg6!? Bg5
And, I think white should win with 2.Bh7! since white wins the bishop at g7 and the exchange at d8 with a discovered check after 2. …Kxh7, and if black plays 2. …Kh8, 3.Bg5 wins massive material again. I hope I am not overlooking something in my haste, but I can’t see any other moves for black at move 1 than the ones I have mentioned.
and if 1… Nf4 then 2.Bxh7+ Kh8 3.Nxf7+ Kxh7 4.Bxf4+ and 5.Nxd8
I think Black should have played more quietly and put his N on g6 at some stage tying an extra white piece to e5 and getting an extra couple of moves to generate counterplay before White’s attack got critical and the potentially weak e6 pawn could be defended by a bishop at d5 maybe.
1. Bg6!!! Bg5 2.Bh7+ and if 2… Kh7 3.Bg5 Kg8 (if 3… Kg7 4. Qh6+) 5. Bf6!! seals the game. No need to think about exchange at d8.
Karl, if I am understanding your line….
1. Bg6 Bg5
2. Bh7 Kh7
3. Bg5 Kg8
4. Bf6
Then, doesn’t 4. …Nxf6 bust white?
After 5. ef6, black can guard the king effectively with 5. …Qf4- preventing white from immediately getting the rook at e1 into the action while also preventing white from getting the queen to h6-g7 or g-file-g7. white has some compensation for the piece, but I doubt it is enough to win, and probably is lost.
James attwell . On 2nd move try Bf7 check. It may be mate.
Yes, I was making a lot of mistakes and I was probably a bit lucky that I didn’t go more wrong than that.
1. Bxg6 fxg6 2. Qxe6+ Kh8 3. Nf7+ Kg8 4. Nxe8+ Kh8 5. Nf7+ Kg8 6. Nd8+ Kh8 7. Nxe8 Bxe8 8. Qxd5 is overwhelming.
Mate attempt 6. Ng5+ Kh8 7. Qf7?! fails to 7. … Bf8
1. … Bxg5 2. Bxh7+ Kh8 3. Bxg5
1. … Nf4 2. Bxf7+ Kh8 3. Bg7+ Kxg7 4. Qxh7#
