1. Qh3!
1……..gxh3. 2. Rg6+. Qg4. 3. fxg4 (threatening 4. gxh3#). h4. 4. Bxd5 winning a rook.
1……..gxf3. 2. Rg6+. Qg4. 3. fxg4. Winning a Q for B with a mating attack
1……..any other move. 2. Qg2#
Certainly not a 3 second position!
There is actually a potential ten second tactic for me there (1… Bxd5) but I’m cheating and going for
1… Qh3 (threatening Qxg2#) 2.gxh3 Rg6+ 3.Qg4 fxg4 (threatening gxh3#) 4.Rfd1 gxh3+ 5.Kf1 Bxd1 6.Rxd1
2.gxf3 Rg6+ 3.Qg4 fxg4 4.f4 Rh6
Three seconds if your clock is in a gravity well and you aren’t.
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who took more than 3 seconds. I spent too much time with Qxh2 and then Qg4 before realizing the right move. About a minute.
Alena, I left a reply on the rook ending comment thread.
Yancey Ward, thank you. I left a reply on the rook ending comment thread for you, too.
