Cuban chess players excelled at the Carlos Torre International Tournament, held this month in the Mexican city of Mérida.

At the event, Grand Master (GM) Yuniesky Quesada finished second in the Wimbledon phase, after losing to US player Alexander Onischuk.

Quesada was among the 16 players who qualified for that phase of the competition, during which he played against excellent players.

In the Master phase, Cuban FIDE Master Lelys Martínes scored 6.5 of nine points.

Grand Masters Omar Almeida (Cuba) and Alonso Zapata (Colombia) finished second and third, respectively.
