Peruvian chess prodigy Jorge Cori detained in Spain en route to competition

Peruvian sporting officials failed to issue Cori the proper documentation to pass through Spain on a connecting flight to the United Arab Emirates, where the World Youth Chess Championship is being held.
Peruvian chess prodigy Jorge Cori is apparently stranded at Madrid’s Barajas Airport after being detained by Spanish immigration officials.
According to El Comercio, problems arose because Cori did not have the proper documentation required for a layover in the airport. It seems that the Peruvian Sport Institute failed to issue him a letter of safe conduct, which would have allowed him to pass through the Madrid airport on his way to the United Arab Emirates, where the World Youth Chess Championship is to be held.
Cori’s father is understandably worried. He told El Comercio that he has not been able to contact his son, saying “The have now given me the document [letter of safe conduct] and I sent it to my son via e-mail. The problem is that I don’t have any way to communicate with [my son] so I can inform him.”
Cori’s father added that there is also confusion as to his son’s whereabouts. At this time, it is unknown if Cori is still in Spain, if he has been deported to Peru, or if he was allowed to continue his voyage. Cori’s father told El Comercio that “The Peruvian embassy has been unable to locate him in the airport.”
