I would like to congratulate Super Grandmaster Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, the new FIDE World Champion! Bulgaria now holds the World Championship Triple-Crown (Stefanova – Women’s World Champion; Spassov – World Senior Champion; Topalov – World Champion).
Topalov will also be ranked as the #1 active chess player in the world as he is the only third person in history to break the magical 2800 rating mark. A well deserved triumphant to a great person, a magnificent chess player and an incredible fighter on the board!
This is a convincing win for Topalov. In my opinion, he is the true Champion of the World. Not only that he displayed one of the best performances ever in this World Championship, he also proved it with his rating and other incredible results this year.
Thank you for writing the commentary. I enjoyed reading your inside take on the tournament.
Keep your sister’s spirits up!
There are argument about weather Kramnik or Topalov is the world champion. In my opinion, suprisingly many still regard Kramnik as the king. As for 2005, Kramnik is not impressive, Topalov is impressive. Topalov wins tournaments, and wins San Luis in a class of his own. Also good that Fide got a cycle going. I regard Topalov as the true champ now.
Still Kramnik should be treated fair and get a good offer to join the Fide-cycle. Kramnik – Topalov match could be a good idea. Or Kramnik could get priviliges to a semi-final next cycle. Then again, Kramnik has had his five years in the sun, and the “unification” is not really a necessity. I have mixed thoughts about this.
ya! Topa!!
Just one clari – Topa isn’t guaranteed to top 2800 yet. To earn it, he has to at least draw with…none other than Judit Polgar! 🙂
On the other hand, a part of me wants Judit to win, so she’ll have a win against both the former champ and the current champ!!
