Mexia ISD Chess Club has contracted with Advantage Cartridge Recycling Company to initiate a year-long fund raiser which will help protect the environment at the same time. Members of the Chess Club will be contacting area businessmen to secure a 12” x 8” x 8” display location to place deposit boxes for Mexians to drop off old cell phones and used printer cartridges and toner bottles, rather than sending them to landfills.

The Chess Club will use the funds to purchase equipment and pay for expenses as they compete with several 5A high schools this school year. The team is planning to compete in the Texas State Scholastic Chess Championship in May 2008, an event held in Houston, TX. The two days and two overnight expenses would come partially from the funds raised.

Justin Day, junior and a strong Mexia player said, “I am excited about our initial entry into tournament play at the state level. For a small school like ours to venture into the fray against the largest 5A schools in the state is a bit intimidating, but we hope to be among the top ten teams at the end of tournament play. Year after next, we want much, much more !” When asked if he meant a state championship, Justin would only smile and wink.

On September 14, Mexia will play Corsicana High School in a chess match at Corsicana. Last year, Mexia lost their opener against this school by an 8-4 score, but rebounded in the spring with a 9-3 win over the established Tiger squad, putting up first year learners against veterans of as much as four years of chess play. “It was a great feeling turning the tables on Corsicana, but they are bound to want revenge for our going into their house and beating them,” said Aaron Forrester, senior and Chess Club president.
