SAN LUIS, MEXICO (8:40 pm) DAY/DIA 4

What others would call a miracle, Claudia (Munoz) calls it “walking on water”. Today, in the mixed tournament she won the first two rounds against boys only to face a girl in the 3rd round – Davila from Zacatecas who is the Mexican Open Champion, she was also defeated by Claudia. In the fourth round she was on board two, the only girl in the top eight competitors. She defeated her third male opponent. By the beginning of the fifth and last round she had already won the Gold Medal, in the female category of the mixed tournament, without even having to show up – but she wanted secure another medal in the overall.

When she appeared for the last round she was on board 1, the only girl in 4-boards. Parents would come to take pictures of her and even girls in her own category came to encourage her as they were proud that a girl was on board 1. However, the game went down to the wire with only two minutes left on the clock. She lost the last round but secured the Bronze Medal in the all around. She had gone on an 8-game winning streak in the middle of the Mexican National Chess Olympics. Tomorrow the tournament ends with a 5 round swiss in a g/15 time control. With Today’s results Claudia now has won 3-medals for Coahuila: 1-Gold and 2-Bronze.

Congratulations to Claudia Munoz!
