The John Marshall and Century chess teams tied for first place in the Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League City Cup Tournament played Saturday at Century High School.

This was the first time in the 10-year history of the cup that co-champions were crowned.

In cup play, five varsity players compete on each team. A player receives one point for a win and half a point for a draw. Top-seeded John Marshall and third-seeded Century advanced to the championship round, where both teams earned 2.5 points each. The two teams then went on to play a “Game 10” speed chess round, which also resulted in a tie. John Marshall and Century were declared co-champions.

Century defeated Lourdes High School 3.5 to 1.5 and JM beat Mayo High School 5-0 in the semifinal round. Lourdes defeated Mayo in the consolation bracket to take third place.

The JM team was also the RASCL regular-season champion with a 5-1 record.
